Matt L. Alder was honored on October 26th 2012 by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Utah and awarded the Honorary AIA Utah Membership for 2012. This award is one of the highest honors that The American Institute of Architects can bestow upon a person outside the profession of architecture.
Matt has been an associate member of AIA for over 30 years. He has participated in the AIA Utah fall conference as a Silver Sponsor and has served on the AIA Programs Committee where programs are planned for the Architectural community to further the education of the professional.
For the past few years Matt has been serving on the College of Architecture + Planning Campaign Committee (Net Zero). Matt clearly indentifies with the need to bring awareness of True Green Architecture through the "re-use" of existing structures. Matt serves on the campaign committee advising and assisting in finding "Friends" to help educate, sponsor and fund this project.
For 20-years through the AIA Continuing Education Program Matt / Alder Sales Corporation has been a provider of Learning Units through presentations of Natural Daylighting and benefits of natural daylight and the human form.
Matt has guest lectured at the University of Utah College of Architecture + Planning on Daylighting and Communication in the profession. Communication is critical in the relationships between Owner, General Contractor, Architect and supplier to fulfill construction documents and create an efficient and aesthetically pleasing building. Communications are essential when dealing with client base and communities we serve.
Social events that Matt has sponsored and participated in, are the Annual AIA Golf Tournament, the AIA installation dinner where the new leadership of AIA Salt Lake Chapter and Utah Society are announced, UFOMA Spring / Fall Conference and Utah School District Foundation Golf Tournaments. Another social event is the Scholarship lunch for the University of Utah College of Architecture + Planning.
Through Alder Sales Corporation, Matt has spearheaded a Scholarship for a Graduate Architecture Student at the University of Utah College of Architecture + Planning. This scholarship is presented to a student that has applied and is in need of assistance to fund their education.
Matt's nomination came from William C. Miller, Professor Emeritus University of Utah Architecture and supported by Jack Livingood, CEO of Big D Construction, Mike Stransky, FAIA of GSBS Architects and Brenda Case Scheer, Dean College of Architecture + Planning; Unviersity of Utah.
